I Love Internet Memes

I was perusing the intertubes this morning and I found an article about old internet memes from about ten years ago. Just a note, I usually use Digg for my perusing. The article brought up some nostalgic stuff I remember watching from when I was in high school, stuff like Homstarrunner and the GI Joe PSA’s. There were a couple on there that I hadn’t seen before and it was really neat-o to check those out, too.

What really piqued my interest was a link to keyboard cat in the articles first paragraph about some of the most current memes. I had heard of keyboard cat before, but had not yet seen the meme in action. My curiosity turned me over to Youtube and the expansive Wikipedia. Of course wiki will get you lost on its vast array of pages for quite some time. I eventually came across the mother-load of internet memes; Know Your Meme. This site is great! It breaks down every internet meme Barney-style! Crazy internet stuff I had known about for years is on there, but neat background stories are given. Stuff I haven’t been subjected to yet is on there, waiting for me to become knowledgeable about.

If you want to waste hours of your life learning the history and stories behind the internet’s most popular crazy stuff, this is the place to do it!

Nursing Is Good For Mom’s Heart Health

From Baby Center, more reasons to nurse your baby as long as you can. When I say that, I mean within reason. I’m not an advocate of nursing your nine year old.

Breastfeeding may protect a woman’s heart

Mon, Dec 21, 2009 (HealthDay News) — Although many women choose to breastfeed because of the numerous health benefits it offers their offspring, new research suggests that breastfeeding may also help the health of the mothers’ hearts later in life.

In a study of nearly 300 women, researchers found that those who had not breastfed were much more likely to have calcification or plaque in their coronary artery, aorta and carotid artery. When calcifications and plaque build up in the arteries, blood flow can be reduced, and, if enough of these deposits build up, they can cause a heart attack or stroke.

“Women who had not breastfed were more likely to develop changes that might lead to symptomatic heart disease,” said the study’s lead author, Dr. Eleanor Schwarz, an assistant professor of medicine, epidemiology, obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at the University of Pittsburgh Center for Research on Health Care.

Results of the study will be published in the January issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Schwarz and her colleagues had previously looked at breastfeeding’s effect on older women, and that study found that post-menopausal women who had breastfed were less likely to report having heart disease. Another study on breastfeeding from a different research group recently reported in the journal Diabetes that women who breastfed were less likely to develop metabolic syndrome, a clustering of risk factors that indicate an increased risk for heart disease.

The current study included 297 women who’d had at least one baby. At the time of the study, they were 45 to 58 years old, had never been diagnosed with heart disease and had no known symptoms of heart disease.

The researchers used two imaging techniques — electron beam tomography and ultrasound — to assess the health of the women’s blood vessels.

They found that 32 percent of the women who had not breastfed had coronary artery calcification, compared with 17 percent of the breastfeeding moms. The researchers found calcifications in 39 percent of the aortas of women who hadn’t breastfed, versus 17 percent of the women who had. They also found plaque deposits in the carotid artery of 18 percent of the women who had not breastfed and 10 percent of those who had.

After adjusting the data for socioeconomic status, family history and lifestyle factors, heart disease risk factors and body mass, the researchers concluded that women who had not breastfed were five times more likely to have aortic calcifications than women who consistently breast-fed.

Schwarz said the researchers suspect that the apparent benefit from breastfeeding on later heart health stems from how a woman’s body stores fat and how that fat is released — or not released — after pregnancy.

“A woman’s body expects to go through pregnancy and then lactation,” Schwarz explained. “During pregnancy, a woman’s body stores fat that it expects to release during lactation. If women don’t breastfeed, then the body has to deal with excessive fat.”

The bottom line is that “it’s really important to try to breastfeed,” she said. “If you can breastfeed for three months after each pregnancy, your blood vessels are likely to be in better shape down the road.”

She added that women who can’t breastfeed for three months ought to try for at least a little while. “Some women may feel overwhelmed by some of the long-term breastfeeding recommendations,” Schwarz said. “Our study looked at three months, but if that’s not possible, the longer you can stick with it, the better.”

Dr. Catherine McNeal, an associate professor of medicine and a specialist in cardiovascular disease prevention at Scott & White Healthcare, said she agrees that a decrease in fat mass after pregnancy is probably the factor that’s providing a heart benefit to women who breastfed.

“We used to think of fat as this inert material, but it’s very bioactive,” McNeal said. “It produces a plethora of bad hormones and inflammatory markers that influence blood pressure, lipids and the risk of diabetes.”

McNeal said that the study provided preliminary data “and we need to look at this area more closely, but I’m excited to see they found a positive effect of breastfeeding.”

What you can do:
Breastfeed your child if you can. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding your baby for at least the first year of life, and longer if both you and your child wish to continue.

New Gallery!

Aunt Julie asked me to find a way to find photos on my blog easier. She loves to look at pictures of the boys. I just added a media gallery to make that possible. Hope she likes it! I still need to figure it out, since I just want to put pictures of the kids and not much else.

Merry Christmas!

The Hunters first Christmas. Yay!

Chillin’ with Daddy after opening presents and Mommy cooks.

Isn’t the tree beautiful?

Mountains of Christmas cookies and a few other baked goods. There’s triple chocolate chip, oatmeal, two kinds of cake batter cookies and sugar cookies. Plus, there is what’s left of a butter rum cake from a Christmas party and two picky-pies (pumpkin pies). I was really jazzed about the sugar cookies. Britten’s boyfriend, Brandon, brought them over and they taste just like the Christmas cookies I used to have as a kid. When I think of Christmas cookies, those are what I think of. He was good enough to give me the recipe.

The Hunters Christmas dinner consisted of cereal, chicken and sweet potato.

Our Christmas dinner consisted of turkey and all the fixin’s. It was lovely, the turkey was delicious!

I took a ton more pictures with my D100. I’ll post a few here and a lot more on my Picasa site! I promise I will try and update the Picasa site sometime this week.

We still aren’t finished opening presents, so Christmas is continuing on to the next day in my house!

Also, on Christmas Eve I got one of the best Christmas presents ever from my Aunt Tisha. She texted this pic to my iPhone. Kristen looks beautiful!

RIP Care Bear

So, ever since I got home from New  York and I have spoken on the phone with my youngest sister, I have been calling her Care Bear, or Kerrie Berrie. It’s just a cute little pet name I thought she would like. I figured since we live so far away from each other it would be a great way for us to bond, especially since I have little pet names for my brother and other sister. I call Chris and Caitlin all sorts of crazy stuff, and I wanted Kerrie to feel included, especially since she indulges in some of these nicknames herself.

Well, last month I called up my Mom’s house. When my Mom answered I asked her if I could talk to “Care Bear.” My Mom then said, “you know Kerrie doesn’t like being called that. Please don’t be upset, but Kerrie is all she needs to be called.” Of COURSE I got upset. My first reaction was to act very childish about it. I wanted to call up Kerrie and yell at her, tell her that if she doesn’t feel close to me since I live so far away that this is a way for us to be close. Tell her that if I can’t call her these little nicknames, that she can’t call me any either. AND, if I ever heard her calling anyone else a nickname she would get a sharp reprimand from me. Thank goodness I didn’t do this over the phone to her, sometimes I can conduct myself like a grown-up, though it’s difficult to do.

I was so MAD! I couldn’t really figure out why I felt so mad and hurt for about a day. Then I finally realized the reason why I was so hurt. She’s my SISTER and she didn’t feel like she could tell me that she didn’t like that name without being rude. She let me call her that name for FIVE MONTHS and couldn’t just say to me “Mar, you stupid-head, don’t call me that, I don’t like it.” I was hurt because she doesn’t let me in to her life at all, not even to tell me that something I do for her, she doesn’t like. Now, when I talk to her, I have a hard time not calling her Care Bear or Kerrie Berrie since I called her those things for so long. I hope this post can act as a little closure for it. RIP Care Bear.

FORKER!

I love the way Trent says fork. It sounds so inappropriate. I have taken to using it to replace the f-word.

Black Out Blinds Are Awesome

When we first moved into the house there were no curtains or blinds. We were going to go out and get curtains, then we decided to go to Ikea to get blinds. After measuring all the windows and just sort of getting overwhelmed, we decided to hire a company to do the blinds for us. We ordered cordless black-out blinds for our room and the kids room. The are great! I don’t worry about the kids and cords getting wrapped around their necks. Plus, when I get up in the morning it is still nice and dark in the room. Love ‘em!

Knit And Gab Christmas Party

On the 22nd I went to the Knit and Gab Christmas Party! Knit and Gab is the group of women that gets together every Tuesday from my previous neighborhood and spends the night eating and gossiping (there’s actually no knitting). I still like to go when I have the time. It’s kind of a long drive me now, but it’s so nice having a night out, and Hunter is old enough now that I can leave him home with Daddy.

I have been looking forward to this Christmas party for months now. I brought little baggies of all those truffles I made for everyone who was there and Trent and I made a butter rum cake with a rum glaze. Everyone really seemed to enjoy  the presents I brought. We do secret Santa gift exchange and I had no idea of what to bring for my person. I ended up making a scarf for her and buying some lavender scented bath stuff. Since I can’t make hats I had Britten crochet a hat to match the scarf. Her daughter-in-law told me she really liked it. So, everything I brought to the party was a big hit.

I got a bracelet from my secret Santa. I don’t usually like bracelets, but this one is SO pretty. It’s just a simple silver band with “Live, Love, Laugh” written on it. Unless I lose it (which I hope I don’t) I think I’m going to be wearing it all the time. I love jewelry that is small and dainty, and this definitely fits the bill! Thanks Kay! (She was me secret Santa this year!)

I also tried promoting my Mom’s website while I was there. I wore my Kristen necklace and brought my other necklaces that Mom made for me. One of the Knit and Gab ladies pointed out to me that my Mom should start making eye glass’s chains. She told me that she’s been looking for a well made light-weight, but pretty, chain for her glass’s for a while. She said that she wants ten percent of all sales for the idea, or my Mom can just make one for her. I thought it was a grand idea! I think my Mom is going to start designing one soon!

Father: ‘Someone left her for dead’

December 20, 2009

It has been more than a month since Kristen Grindley was found bleeding and unconscious in the middle of a dark Pullman road and her father says she still can’t recall what happened in the early morning hours of November 11th. KXLY4′s Colleen O’Brien has the exclusive interview.

Whitman County authorities called Rick in the early morning hours of November 11th to ask if he had a daughter living in Pullman and if he can identify her. He says the next four hours, as he made his way by car from Seattle to Spokane, were a blur.“Extreme anger in terms of how could somebody do this to her, how could someone leave her, which was the most horrifying thing,” Rick said.He entered the Intensive Care Unit at Sacred Heart Medical center to find his daughter bandaged from head to toe, on a ventilator and sedated. He says any part of her body not bandaged was either bruised or cut.“As a father you just feel like it’s your responsibility to protect your kids and it feels like, how did I let her down?” Rick said.Since Kristen experienced major head trauma when she fell or was thrown from a vehicle along Pullman-Albion road, she is unable to recall the events of that night.Rick can only piece things together as he waits for his daughter’s memory to return.“We know that Kristen was safe in the house she was sharing with her boyfriend until about 1:27 in the morning,” Rick said.Kristen’s boyfriend is considered a person of interest in the case and Whitman County detectives have seized his car as evidence.“Clearly we’re just letting nature take its course, let her get better and then when she’s able to speak, when she can remember specifics about that night, we’ll put her in contact with the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office,” Rick said.Meantime, Rick says his family will focus on Kristen’s recovery. She was recently moved from Sacred Heart to St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute, but had a setback this week dealing with blood clots and was moved back to Sacred Heart.Rick says the blood clots are under control and she will soon return to the rehabilitation center, where she receives physical and speech therapy.“She’s not going to give up, she was on the treadmill last week when I was over at the rehab center and you could just see it in her, she is going to get better,” Rick said.He lovingly attributes the progress she’s made during her recovery to her stubbornness and fighting spirit. If you’d like to keep up with Kristen’s recovery her family started a Facebook group.
